WTB 81 to 84 Maxima 5 speed transmission

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

WTB 81 to 84 Maxima 5 speed transmission

I would like to buy a complete 5 speed Maxima transmission. A diesel transmission would be preferred, but gas should work also.

I've got a core gasser MT from a '82 720. Been sitting in the rain for a couple of years uncovered, probably full of water. Supposed to have been "OK". Would have come behind a Z22 engine (L-series bolt pattern, but canted over 10°). Good for parts only, in your application, I suspect.

MT 280ZXs are a better source than Maximas, I'd think. Not too many MT Maximas back then.

I've got one from an '81 z. It is good, has been stored inside and is for sale. Let me know if you're interested.

I am interested. Don't know a whole lot about Z cars. I take it they are a direct interchange with the Maxima? I would half expect a Z car to have a close ratio setup. Did the rest of the Z car get junked?

The ratios are similar, the z trans is more or less a bolt-in.

The car did get scrapped and up until 2 weeks ago I had *a lot* of stuff that I sold off very cheap...

I still have a few items but obviously not as much. What do you need?

I don't need anything but the trans, but I can see some irony in a diesel Maxima benefiting from the demise of a Z car. How much do you want for the trans? My email is Goglio704@aol.com if you prefer, but I probably check here more often. Thanks.

Two questions:

Any pics?

Do you think this thing will go UPS? Truck freight would likely be painfully expensive, but I could receive it at work where they are set up for such things.

Edit: Looked on Ebay, similar transmissions from rebuilding outfits claim to ship UPS. Packaging would be another question - wonder if it would fit in one of those $50 plastic truck boxes?

I can take some pics if you would like.

I am sure it would go UPS, anything under 150 lbs will and it's not oversize. Ground would probably not be too expensive. I have no way to weigh it, but I would guess it is about 50-75 lbs - I am sure Al would probably know.

It doesn't really have any ears or anything to break off, so it should be safe in a sturdy box with dense packing...I would think.

I will measure it later too.

I didn't realize the UPS limit was that high. I was thinking 100 pounds. I had the trans out of the other car when I changed the clutch, and I think 80 pounds would be close.

I saw this one on Ebay and it looks like what I remember of the Maxima trans. I know the shifter setup is at least similar. I have seen pics of similar trans which had a rectangular window where the shifter mounted.

UPS has a weight limit of 150 lbs.
http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resour ... _size.html

You will have to crate it, and it will have to be well drained, and probably bagged. This is not a 10-minute job.

Plugging in some numbers, to ship a crate 24x24x30 @ 100 lbs from 80290 to 70707, UPS Ground is $77 and will take five days.

In terms of crating it, I'll spring for a plastic tool box if it will fit in one. If I'm lucky enough to salvage my current tranny in the future it would need a home anyway. For the money, I've had good luck with the Contico boxes that Lowes and Walmart normally have.

PICS!

Here are some pics of the trans. If you need anymore of any specific areas please let me know.

Front:

The only stampings I can find is the "L5" near the bottom of the bellhousing. If anyone knows where to look, please mention where and I will take a second look at the trans.

Let me know if I can answer any more questions Matt.

What I find amusing is that the fill plug is on the passenger side on your trans:

But it's on the driver's side on all my 720 versions that I have:

Don't want to give the impression of disinterest. I've been out of town on business and without an internet connection. I will try to get under one of the Maximas tomorrow and, if everything looks workable with the swap, I'll make an offer.
