I've finally gotten a chance to read that page, and it's very good.

Yeah, it looks like a poor core candidate for the rebuild.

Beware the "viton reseal kit" for the VE pump. In most cases, there is NO reliable way to ensure that what you're getting is really viton.
Aaron, I have a spare that I don't need immediately, if'n you don't want to order them directly, or if there isn't sufficient demand for a full order.

This is a good question. Since the other VE IPs leak commonly at the accelerator shaft seal, that one will be the next to go. On the LD28, it's hard to replace that one with the IP in the car, but since you have it out, that one and the top cover seal would the the only ones I'd worry about.shark wrote:Do I need to wory about the composition of the other seals I am replacing in the IP?
See upthread the "lite" IP parts breakdown for a 4-cyl version of the IP:

From what I hear, the cover gasket (really a neoprene seal with a roundish cross-section) is a culprit, No. 67/65. Also the accel shaft seal, which is hard to determine on that pic but is probably either 325 or 329.
Another illustration isn't much better.

Pretty much anything labelled "o-ring" should be replaced if disassembled, but the critical ones are shaft seals, like the manual advancer shaft seal, 39/3 (which the LD engine doesn't have).
Yup. For B100 esp. Lower concentrations soften neoprene more slowly.Do they need to be viton for biodiesel?

What was I thinking? The picture of the LD28 IP above is the generic assy; the one used in the diesel Maximas does have a manual advancer with external control; the control is activated by the "cold start device" (CSD), a thermostatic wax-pellet arrangement bolted to the exteriour of the IP. The CSD linkage both advances the base timing and props the idle speed.asavage wrote:. . . the critical ones are shaft seals, like the manual advancer shaft seal, 39/3 (which the LD engine doesn't have).
Sorry, I just forgot, and was looking at the picture above! Here's FSM 1982 pg EM-25 fragment:

One of my brand-new 1982 IPs (pic taken by seller, a couple of years ago). Note that the CSD changed for 1983; this is the '81-82 version:

Hmmm. Probably not easily. While the part does exist, you have to have the internal shuttle piston that matches. I think.
What should be do-able is to seal the advancer shaft hole with something more permanent. But by the time you've done that, you could just throw a viton o-ring at it and be done with it forever; why bother modifying the cover?

because I have seen no use for this feature and I have a junk pump without the advancer...so I was thinking of extracting it and sealing up the hole. Doesn't really matter, no matter what I have to pull the pump.asavage wrote:why bother modifying the cover?

My 83 sedan is apparently leaking at the IP, a quick glance at the 83 Wagon, its IP looks just the same (coated with fuel/grime). I am looking for three of the shaft seals. Would anyone be interested in another order?
Besides this thread, is there a step-by-step on rebuilding the LD28's IP and a list of seals, tools required? Can I follow the how-to from the VWDiesel's site?
TIA

I've got all the shaft seals I can use at the moment.Midnightz wrote:My 83 sedan is apparently leaking at the IP, a quick glance at the 83 Wagon, its IP looks just the same (coated with fuel/grime). I am looking for three of the shaft seals. Would anyone be interested in another order?
The best I expect one can do is to reseal the IP, not rebuild it. Rebuilding requires specialized calibration equipment that noone outside of a Bosch liscensed injection shop has.Besides this thread, is there a step-by-step on rebuilding the LD28's IP and a list of seals, tools required?
Resealing the distributor head, the shaft seal, the top cover seal, should all be straightforward, once you actually get the IP off the engine. Timing it when reinstalling isn't much fun though. There is a thread on that.

If you can wait until the coming weekend, I'll be home and can look to see what I have left from the original order. I'm pretty sure I can spare one or two of the shaft seals.Midnightz wrote:My 83 sedan is apparently leaking at the IP, a quick glance at the 83 Wagon, its IP looks just the same (coated with fuel/grime). I guess I'll be needing IP seals too. My IP has been leaking. Still trying to 100% locate the source. But probably the shaft....
