1982 Nissan-Datsun Maxima Diesel
LD28 motor (2.8 Liter 6 cylinder diesel)
Automatic Transmission
Includes Service Manual and two Tie Rods
126,107 miles
Supply fuel pump is not working, needs to be fixed for car to run. Aside from this, the car is in reasonable running condition.
The paint, body and interior have only minor blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems except for the fuel pump.

Car is located in Denton Texas, about 40 miles north of Dallas.

$300 or best offer

The supply pump on the diesels is part of the injection pump. The greater probability is the injection pump belt is broke, it has lost it's prime and needs to be bled out, or maybe there is a cracked hose.
If you take the screw out of the side of the fuel filter housing and get fuel up to there, (replace the screw afterwards) and then keep pumping it as much as 25 to 50 pumps... If it doesn't run after that, then try bleeding one line at the injector by cranking it over. If no fuel, then you need a pump belt.

This process would have a greater success if there is a half tank of fuel as opposed to putting a gallon of fuel in the tank.

Certainly worth $300 just the way it is. Sounds like the farmer that had a tree growing up through the tractor wheel and says "The last time it ran, it ran good".

Diesel-man has given you some really solid info on your car. If you get the car fixed with help from this info, I'm still interested even if the price is higher at that point. :wink:

I'm pretty happy with it so far. The problems I've had have been minor and covered under warranty - emissions hardware. I don't think anybody has a good handle on using EGR with a diesel yet. ULSD is supposed to help, but time will tell. Due to its complexity, I doubt it will compare well with an LD28 or 6B Cummins over the long haul, but few things do anyway.

Thanks for the information Diesel-Man. Looks like the info is gonna help the new owner though. I'm really just happy that it doesn't have to be sold for scrap metal at the junkyard.

What diesel-man said: with those low miles, I bet it's the original belt. Nobody really remembers that the injection pump has a belt that needs changing every 60k miles (my original belt died at 87k; have changed it every 60k since) until it breaks and won't run.

The good news is that breaking the IP belt does no harm to the engine, it just won't run.

Advise the new owner that the belt is cheap (under $35 from Nissan) but the belt's tensioner is not (more like $80) and I like to change them both at the same time.

If you can find a shop that will agree to do it, expect to pay about three hours shop labor to change it. It is not difficult, except that there are two sets of alignment marks for the belt, and it's disturbingly easy to use the wrong set.
