IP Rebuild?

Unless you are interested in extracting more power? from your Maxi pump, time and trouble may be saved from finding a crank pirate and helping him make his wrenching more worthwhile. Can you aford to take the pump off three or four times to figure out a problem? I rebuilt a few Chevy Turbo 350's and 400's (20 years ago) and there are a few parts inside that will fit pretty well both ways. Granted there are a few different configurations of injection pumps to match up.
Years back I read in a Mother Earth News type magazine about how this guy was sawing his own lumber for his "self built" house and was asking if anyone was making their own nails? (in a blacksmith forge) Well I'll just let everyone imagine the replies he received.

diesel-man: elbow has an LD20 from AJ @ exportintl (eBay), so a Maxima IP won't (probably) do him much good.

Not at all. Diesel-man was proceeding from the assumption that you were dealing with a Maxima. In that case, a used pump would be a simple solution.
Nobody has spoken up because, AFAIK, nobody here has rebuilt an injection pump. I have replaced the input shaft seal, but that is about it.
At a minimum, IP work requires almost surgical cleanliness.
It may also require special tools.
In my experience, it can be hard for ordinary people to get IP parts. Some shops simply don't sell parts to individuals.
Like any rebuild work, it will involve decisions about whether to replace or reuse parts. Without experience as a guide you can either err on the side of replacement (expensive) or reuse (uncertain).
These are the obstacles I see.

I've never inquired about an LD20 pump of course, but I have asked about the LD28 pump. The two shops I asked didn't seem to think there would be any problem rebuilding the pump. There should be numbers on the pump. Call an injection shop with these numbers, and they should be able to tell you something.

The built-in vane lift pump is probably the same on both Four and Six cylinder versions of the VE-sytle IP, so parts would be easy there. I don't know if the housing interchanges, though, and the housing can wear.
The distributor head for your Four might be identical to a Gen1/II VW's. They do wear out.
Some of the flyweight governor bits will be unique to the LD20. The plunger probably is (and it wears out). But things like the delivery valves and much of the internal linkage is probably largely the same as other VEs.
The Torque Control stuff will be unique to the LD20, as will a bunch of springs having to do with governing various things (fuel vs RPM map, RPM vs housing pressure -> timing).
I have posted a link to a quite decent and not too expensive book, the Bosch "yellow book" for the Bosch VE/distributor injection pumps. Let me see if I can find it . . . well, I can't find it, so I'll look it up again.

This is a very good book on the VE IPs, though it is not specific to the LD versions and contains much that does not apply.
There is an equivalent Bosch manual for the Inline IPs as used on some SDs.
