Parts availability: Canada vs US

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

Parts availability: Canada vs US

#1

Post by plenzen »

I did some checking at the Nissan dealer that I use (October 30/07). I checked on a particular part number that is NOA in the US for # 16805-V0700, (idler tensioner pulley) and it "is" in fact available from Nissan Japan for $117.00 Ca. There is a three week delivery on it.

That being said!
Dealership requires the $117.00 to order it, and then they would send the request. Their computer system is set up that way and needs confirmation # in order to do this. Confirmation #'s are generated by payment receipts. They don’t order parts from Japan unless they are prepaid.
The order would then go to Nissan Japan and they would confirm the order/availability by issuing a delivery date.
I had done this with the a cooling system fitting that I ordered that fits on the cyl head and, after three months with no delivery date being generated, they (Japan) emailed the dealership and said that the part was NOA and it has since been removed from the availability list. I was then refunded my money.

That being said!
I ordered a throttle cable for my 87. (To have a spare for when this one DOES eventualy fail). It has to come from Japan and there was a three week waiting period for it. The parts man that I use there (very patient man) checked today and got a delivery date of late November for it. (Closer to 6 weeks actually from when I ordered it)

I also spoke to him about the mention that perhaps the “Motor Sports” division may have different access to parts. He said that as long as he has a part number there is no difference in sourcing between the two, at least in Canada there isn’t.

He did however say that some parts are available to the Canadian market that are not available to the US market and vice versa. He could not give me a reason for this but has run into it in past.

What "idler pulley?" You have power steering pump, if I recall. Well ... on my SD22 with Air/Cond compressor, there is a similar "idler pulley" that has a replaceable bearing. On the bench, pressing out bearing / pressing new bearing in, is easy. And the bearing is found in any bearing house store.

That part number is for an LD28 IP belt idler.

both of my idler pulleys have replaceable bearings, they just come out with a hammer after removing a circlip. Just gotta wack a new bearing, which seems to be readily available, because I got both of mine in stock at two different FLAPS.

If the IP belt tensioner is (still) available for CA$117 + shipping, that's a better price than my rebuilt units. It's over double what we were paying for them a year ago, but still a "bargain".

My rebuilt units should be "lifetime" though, unlike the OEM ones.

Guess I was not thorough enough in my original posting.
Al has clarified the issue with his posting.
There had been some discussion on a different topic in regards to NLA parts etc. This posting was as a result of that topic and the part number was merely for a test to see if in fact there was a difference in availablity from US to Canada.

I have already changed the Idler brg for the PS pump and it was an every day buy at Wal Mart/Target/Circle K type 6203 or similar.

I still want (at least) one of yours Al. I might want it without the bearing though. I can source and install a bearing locally without any trouble and put that expense off for a while.

Plenzen,

I appreciate you checking into this. I wonder if your dealer would be interested in taking some credit card orders and shipping south of the border? On parts like this I'd rather pay a little more to somebody that can get results rather than being bluffed by somebody that doesn't really want the sale.

As far as it goes, Nismo's site still lists the 16805-V0700 tensioner for $57, though we know it isn't available in the US anymore (or is on national backorder for more than two months, at any rate).
I have already changed the Idler brg for the PS pump and it was an every day buy at Wal Mart/Target/Circle K type 6203 or similar.
There are a variety of grades of these commodity bearings. The Chinese ones are especially inexpensive, I've seen a 6203 for under $3 here. I don't buy them, but I see them.

the chinese bearings are shoddy at best, for me they are just a waste of my time. Half the battle in me repairing anything, is actually getting up to do it.

Wal mart carries bearings?

I was being facetious in that it was the common type of brg. that you can get at any number of auto supply places, or perhaps even your corner store. I personally utilized a SKF that I got from my auto parts supplier here, and I think it was around $9.00 for the double sealed one. On the other hand though, I have seen a "Trailer Wheel Brg. repair kit" at Wally World that included the inner and outer brgs, cones and cups with a package of grease too. They were the Chinese ones and I think the kit was 13.00. CA!!
This check on availability was to simply offer a possible alternative resource for the ever increasing "extinction" of Nissan/Datsun diesel parts.
