Parting out Diesel Maxi Wagon - Aspers, PA

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

Parting out Diesel Maxi Wagon - Aspers, PA

#1

Post by 83_maxima »

Anyone else see this? http://tinyurl.com/e8695

The seller says he is parting out a diesel Max. He lives in Aspers, PA (close to you Salvy?). He may have some parts of value, but seems like he knows what brings $$$ and those items are gone.

Might be worth contacting him if anyone needs some small parts off of the car that isn't a crank or a starter. 8)

He says he is sending it to the scrapyard soon.

Martin, yes the seller is pretty close to me. In fact I already know who he is and have known him for the past 3 years. His name is Billy and I've been to his house more than a few times with my dad. My dad is the one who originally contacted him because of his ownership of Maxima diesels. That's back when my dad owned his 1981 Datsun 810 diesel sedan. I've gone to Billy a few times for parts for my Maxima, including a radiator I bought from him. When I originally bought my car it needed a rear driveshaft to get down the road and I also went to Billy for that. In his prime he has owned 3 Maxima diesel cars, including the one he is about to scrap on EbayMotors. Matt (goglio704) bought one of his cars off EbayMotors a while back too. I've seen that car before it was even put on Ebay and it's the one he actually converted to diesel/5-speed. The one he shows on Ebay now is the last car he owns and I'm kinda sad he is not staying "in to them" anymore. But, oh well. Right now I'm not in need of any parts either otherwise I'd probably already have asked him at some point.

I was about to e-mail him about the tranny and it's mileage when I realised that the car in the pic appears to be an 82 (from the grille and the hood ornament) and not an 83, therefore it wouldn't have a L4N71B. :?:

I noticed that too, but didn't think much about it. Maybe the hood was replaced at some point and they didn't bother to add the front grill crown strip or change the hood ornament..??

Will front doors off a wagen fit a sedan??
Mine are junk. I'd like to replace them and maybe put a new coat of paint on it. It's in pretty good shape really.

I am 99 percent positive that they would bolt right on.

You are right- besides the missing parts/panels there really isnt any rust or dents and all the glass is there, too bad aspers is a 4-5 hour drive from where I live, I would have scooped up as many parts as I can if i was closer

I bought one of my cars from the guy in Aspers. His name is Bill. He is a nice, honest guy. If I'd had more time and money when I picked up my car there wouldn't be much left of his parts car. I am the reason he has no starters, alternators, or axle shafts. I don't remember what shape the doors were in. I wasn't looking for body parts anyway. I can tell you he quit driving this car because the unibody frame rails were too rusty to pass inspection. I'm pretty sure he has a fairly new driveshaft in this car. Didn't somebody want a driveshaft a while back?

Front doors = yes
Rear doors = no

Ask Carimbo, I nearly cried when we stripped an '83 Gasser Sedan a month ago, it had perfect doors, the best I've seen on a car being parted out. I tried to convince Carimbo to store them -- I have no more room -- but they went to the scrapyard -- beautiful, beautiful doors. I am saddened by their passing.

The Wagon rear doors have quarter windows that are wider at the top than the Sedans'.

If you haven't already, read the FAQ's Common Problems section and click on "Door rattles" for useful info. They're all cracked -- except those doors Carimbo & I sent to the scrapyard :(

Doors and front bumper are mine,
Just got an email from him.
Looks like a road trip now. He's about 4 hours from me.
If it's an 83 with the O/D I might take it also.

bcdivad, could you check on this?

If the driveshaft is good (check all three joints for free operation, no "notchiness"), see what he wants for it -- must be for a Wagon, I can't use a Sedan driveshaft, but Gasser & Diesel driveshafts are interchangeable from mid-82 through '84.

Shipping: I can't remember if the center brg support bracket can be easily removed, but if it can, I want the driveshaft shipped inside a carpet core tube. I have a spare (bad) driveshaft and I'll check on that bracket later this morning. [later] The Parts Catalogue shows that it comes of with two bolts/nuts.

The hard part is capping the ends. The way I've done it is to cut appropriate-sized circles of wood that fit inside the ends of the tube, and use wood screws through the outside edge of the tube into the edge of the wood circles. It's some work, and you don't throw the result away -- but mine didn't come back once, so I don't have one anymore.

I suppose I should just build another one and ship it to you. Yeah, that's what I'd do. Anyway, check on the driveshaft for me, eh?

Al S.

Just for reference: my spare Wagon driveshaft (with a bad u-joint) will easily fit within a 4.5' tube, after the carrier brg bracket is removed to reduce the width.
