SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Your partsman is going to examine the manufacture.
You're looking for the 'O' around the 'N' cast on the pump
(this is excessive play yet ... it had not leaked ... yet)

			Philip's 1982 WP:
=======================================================
Here's a SD WP I bought on eBay a few months back. It has a cast-iron body but does not impress me as a very good casting. In the last pic, note the bearing cartridge's wire clip to retain it in the housing -- and about 8mm clearance to the front! To me, that means the cartridge could slide to the front 8mm before the clip is effective.
I don't have an OEM WP handy (gave one to TDI_Joe, recycled the other one), but if someone has an OEM one off and loose, would you kindly send me a pic of the bottom (where the clip is shown on the last pic below)?

			According to
Nissan FAST parts lookup program , the Water Pump for a 1982 (SD22) is:
(click on any image for larger)
21010-31W26, $173 . One assumes this is for a new (not rebuilt) pump.
The part No. is different for 1984 (SD25):
21010-09W25, $171 .

The parts man I gave the part number to, he wrote down the wrong number.
So, the water pump (correct number: NWP 559198) is on its way to me from Portland -- I will receive it
tomorrow Wednesday. I will take a picture of it and post the picture.
The fan belt is here in town already.
The extra water pump gaskets are a bit harder to find; he is working to find them. That may require an additional day or two.

Is that a bearing clip/retainer or the top coil of the spring for the mechanical seal?

Looks to me to be a retaining clip.

Got the WP, belt, gaskets today.
(click on any image for larger)
The water pump is NAPA NWP 559198, $67, and looks a lot better than the other new WP I showed upthread. It comes with the fan clutch mounting studs and a block gasket.
WP-to-block gaskets are Fel-Pro 35353, $2 ea.
Belt (non-A/C, non-PS) is 25-9375, $12.

			61 HP isn't enough?
I've hauled some pretty good loads in my 720s. Fast is not always of prime importance. Economy is pretty good with the SD22.
