Help nissan 720 sd22 diesel

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

OK, I used the hair dryer and it cranked with that. I have ordered some glow plugs. I have a spare alternator I can use also. I checked the main wires and it is putting out no voltage.

I have an issue with the key. The key will not shut off the engine. It does everything except that. Is this the injection pump controller or the ignition switch?

And I am going to rob parts off the other truck. Will an 81 datsun grill fit on an 83 nissan?

OK, you say it will not shut off the engine, my first question is when the engine is off(not running), is the injection pump arm in the off position or the run position?

Another thing I would mention, you have bought new glow plugs, did you test your old ones, I ask because there is a chance that your old used glow plugs are better parts than the new ones you can buy, if your old ones work when tested use them, they do not sell the good ones anymore.

You say it cranked with the hair drier, does this mean it ran/started/tried to start sooner/quicker?

The grill can be switched out to the 1983 grill as long as you use all the sheet metal for that grill, you will also likely have to put the headlight buckets in the lower position also, later models the headlights are around an inch lower, 1981 on all the holes are in the sheet metal for all the years parts, 1980 only has the holes for the higher position for the headlights/buckets.

this is the truck/engine that does not start after sitting all night, there has to be a leak somewhere letting the fuel drain back to the tank
I know the voices are not real,
but they have some really good ideas.

If I understand his post correctly it sounds like it may have started with the hair dryer but he did say:

"I checked the main wires and it is putting out no voltage.

No voltage to the glow plugs means it wont start without them, especially on a cold soak over night.

Your right about the glow plugs as the new ones are pretty fragile.

I had the Delphi ones that were pretty robust. ( HDS283)

I might suggest looking for the CN 433 Marine Nissan version of the plugs.
They were bullet proof.
No timers on the Marine version. Just a push button in the wheel house with a coil under a heat shield that you waited till it glowed red and then started. A lot of people would keep the button pushed after it started to help it idle a bit smoother.

Problem with being retired is that you never get a day off.

I meant the alternator is producing no voltage.

The truck will not automatically pull back to the off position when the ignition is turned off. There is a lever added so I can manually do it.

Yeah, I think the fuel lines are too old, the 2nd time I tried to start it with the drier it would not fire, but it did the first time. I had to bleed the injectors even though I had started it a few days prior. The truck will not start unless I spray ether, but I didn't have to use it when I used the hair drier.

I need some glow plugs anyway, the other sd22 engine doesn't have any, and I need to cover up the holes
