Emissions Check

It's time to renew the tabs and this year required the emissions test. Apparently for light diesels they only check the opacity. Passed, 5% out of a permissible 20%. Test consisted of driving the car onto dyno rollers, hooking up their gizmo to the battery, accelerating to 25MPH and holding it steady for a short period.

Probably would have tested better but engine was likely loaded up from 15 minutes idling waiting on the rollers for the monkeys to try to get the TV set working. They failed. Ended up not using it. IIRC it is supposed to display a virtual speedometer.

What a fiasco that place was. My presence obviously broke up their hacky-sack game. They could not stop wide-eyed jibber-jabbering and bouncing around the whole time. Crystal meth?

King County requires emissions testing for 1982 vehicles? I thought it'd be too old and exempt.

From www.ecy.wa.gov/pubs/94br08.pdf
"Washington’s emission check areas are parts of Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Spokane counties. Vehicles registered in emission check areas must have an emission test every two years. You’ll know your vehicle needs an emission test if you see it stated on your license tab renewal notice.
What vehicles need a test, and when?
The chart below shows when different model years need testing. Vehicles newer than five years and older than 25 years do not need to be tested.

Year
Model years requiring a test
2006
1982-1994 (even model years), plus 1997, 1999, 2001
2007
1983-1995 (odd model years), plus 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002
2008
1984-1994 (even model years), plus 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003"

"Diesel vehicles: Diesel vehicles get their smoke levels measured:
• while driven on a dynamometer (rollers), or
• with the throttle pedal fully depressed and immediately released several times."

Looks like this would be the last year for testing for my '82.
