LD28M air filter setup

Post by richard Novossiltzeff »

Hello all, from the LD28 marine guys...
A number of us, owners of Albin 27s fitted with the LD28 marinized engine, have been searching for an answer as to why our air filters look so antiquated - they are nothing but a 6" ID X 3" rough piece of cylinder mesh mostly covered by a piece of foam tied with some SS wire.
We are wondering what you guys are using for an air filter, or has Nissan ever had a proper filter and where do we get them ( it seems even Jetsco has nothing serious)?
Operating in a marine environment usually avoids any requirement for fancy air filters so maybe we should'nt worry after all! (I'm not sure how to post a picture in this message)
Thanks for any input and Merry Xmas and a good 2007.

The automotive LD28 has a flat panel paper filter. Don't know that it would be what you would want. Have you looked at a Donaldson air filter? I assume you would have space in the engine compartment to mount most anything reasonable?

On gasoline boats many times all that it is/was delivered with, is a spark arrester, if it backfired. On a diesel that is obviously necessary. Also the logic continues that you will not be tailgating trucks that are stirring up roadside dirt or piloting past a field that a farmer is plowing up while the wind blows past you. Hence in a marine environment dirt should not be a problem. Mice maybe, or a bird....bait perhaps?

What is your top speed with a pair of LD28's? 25-30 knots? Can you see the shore behind you for the "coal" rolling out the back? Is the block freshwater cooled and the exhaust manifold seawater cooled? How well are you pleased with your boat/engine combination?

Gee, Diesel man, an Albin 27 tops out at only 10-15 kts depending on the prop and one engine. Our boats are for older guys and we go for the distance at 1.5 GPH! And don't worry, there isn't supposed to be soot pouring out at 30k and the wake is enough to scare away the mermaids...
You figured it out: I agree, those other guys should'nt worry about that flimsy filter in a marine envirenment.
You got it also for the cooling: the engine is fitted with a heat exchanger that uses raw salt (or fresh) water to cool the coolant in the engine. The pump used is an impeller type that is driven by a standard belt off the engine pulley. That raw water is flushed through a " wet" exhaust that also helps muffle the sound - it gives it a nice "throaty" sound similar to a 6 cyl. Harley, hmmm. See pictures on A. Savage's post on marine LD28s.

For Matt B.... there is no space limitation for any filter system as for cars and I just might check that Donaldson filter, thanks.

The ambient level of suspended dust can be quite high, even on the water. There is never a good reason to omit an air filter, IMO.

Donaldson makes air filter assys for many OEMs, including Frieghtliner. They've gone plastic recently though.
