Guys, thanks for all the help and info. The help and expertise you can expect here is just grand.
I'm cleared up on the automatic transmission and fully understand what the smaller hoses purpose are. Thank you for that clarification. Steve, you put it exactly right that I do have a dilemma and I'm looking forward to having the issue straightened out here soon. Al, about the thermostat if you read some of my replies earlier in this thread it will answer your question. But instead I can tell you right now to make it easy. I installed a brand new thermostat that I bought from my local AutoZone. Not sure if that is still wrong to do, but if so let me know. And after I do finish a test with block fluid, I will try to take pictures during the disassembly process. I'm sure you guys will be interested in seeing my LD28 and its condition. Even I will probably be surprised as I've never took a cylinder head off an engine in my current automotive repairing history. My dad is the one with the experience, so he will be the main guy in the process of taking this baby apart. Thanks again.

I know I've asked this at least twice, maybe three times, but I don't recall reading an answer: did you read THIS POST and are you sure that you have the correct thermostat, with the bypass passage cover on the bottom? At least NAPA is selling the wrong thermostat for the LD28 (I think).TheDieseliminator wrote:Al, about the thermostat if you read some of my replies earlier in this thread it will answer your question. I purchased my thermostat from O'Reilly Auto Parts, it is a Murray thermostat and it has the bypass restrictor as per original. I don't know if I would recommend it, the first one went south after a few weeks and I had to pull and replace it again. The part was gratis but it's the labor on this that makes it annoying.TheDieseliminator wrote:I installed a brand new thermostat that I bought from my local AutoZone. Autozone doesn't show pictures of their products so I have no idea what the "Duralast", "Valuecraft", or "Failsafe" thermostats look like for this application. Al provided pictures of the Beck Arnley stats already. Just be sure that it has the bypass restrictor.

Al, sorry for the confusion. I checked out the post in the link you gave me and from what I'm looking at it seems to me that my thermostat I bought at AutoZone does not have the bypass passage cover on the bottom of it. The thermostat I bought is a little bit shorter in height than the first thermostat you gave a picture of (the NAPA THM 536080). Well looks like the thermostat I bought is not acceptable for use in the LD28 diesel engine? Given NAPA is selling the wrong thermostat, I bet AutoZone is too. The one I bought came in a little box and is the "Duralast" thermostat. The part number for it at the bottom of the box is 15358.
You might want to check this listing out, it may suit your needs. They're also listing additional fluid for the tester.

Good find, Steve.
Running a search on that Lisle 75500, I find there's a special diesel leak detector fluid, Lisle 75730.
While that eBay auction is a good price ($25 + 7), you can do as well at Dodgetopia ($24 +?)

There's another Lisle kit online for $28 BIN and another, of another maker, for something like $50, but it may be a bigger contraption etc. Also, the first link is also selling the magical mystery test fluid too, but it's more than the Napa stuff.asavage wrote:Good find, Steve.

Speaking of thermostats, what do you guys think about this thermostat being sold on EbayMotors? Link: Maxima Diesel 81-84 Motorad OEM Replacement Thermostat The price isn't very friendly though, but it does look as though it has the bypass passage cover. The one I bought from AutoZone was completely wrong and I returned it yesterday to get my money back. Thanks.

How 'bout ordering a Beck-Arnley from NAPA?
BA 1430354 Thermostat $15.30
Comment: OE Standard Temperature 192 Degrees
BA 1430628 Thermostat $15.30
Usually no shipping on NAPA parts, and those "retail" prices are usually discounted somewhat.BA 1435354 Thermostat - Failsafe $32.44
Comment: Fail-Safe OE Standard Temperature 192 Degrees

Al, the OEM standard temperature thermostat for the Maxima diesel is 180 degrees. I think I'm going to go ahead and order a Beck-Arnley thermostat from NAPA and I like the thermostat that is first pictured for my choice. But, could you give me the Beck-Arnley part number for the same thermostat, but 180 degrees? Oh and another question, can I just take the Beck-Arnley thermostat part number to my local NAPA store and buy it there? Thanks. How 'bout ordering a Beck-Arnley from NAPA?

BA 1430081 Thermostat $15.30
NAPA doesn't make anything except labels & boxesOh and another question, can I just take the Beck-Arnley thermostat part number to my local NAPA store and buy it there?
The "BA" part is NAPA's "line code". The "1430081" is NAPA's part No. for the BA part. Armed with both, you can order it at any NAPA.
If you buy it online, it's only $10.50. Probably about that much or a little more at a retail NAPA. The $15.30 price is what a reseller is supposed to sell it for, more or less.

Al, thanks for the part number and info about the prices. Today I went to my local NAPA store and gave them the part number for this thermostat. They had to order it and said it would arrive in 1-2 days. The price was $10.49, which is before tax of course. So not too much of a difference between going to my local store or the internet website. I should be good to go.
