SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Speaking of TD series Nissan diesel engines I wanted to ask how good are they as far as being built durable, do they have a cast iron cylinder head (like SD series), and are they the old style OHV or more recent OHC design? Can anyone give a good amount of specs on them? Thanks.

Philip, well I wouldn't say I've given up on an SD25 but I'd like to learn more about the TD series engines to see if they are durable given they have been born into the 90's where electronics are more present in a vehicle. Plus I think the TD will bolt into a Nissan hardbody given you go with the right engine to transmission package. Let the learning begin.

Having witnessed your persistent inquisitiveness for over a year (maybe two?) and considering this is an SD forum, here's the book you need to buy.

As a teaser, the TD series has the cam on the opposite side of the block from the SD, the head is a cross-flow design, and the oil pump in not in the sump. But, it's still an IDI chamber diesel.

Pathfinders of this age have electronic controls. The engines are good. Japanese engines of this age have little use and if they are serviced, are good. Due to steam cleaning you get corroded electricals. The TD25 is a slow workhorse, but it is good.

The E24 [URVAN] mostly don't use the electronic controls. I would expect the coach [CARAVELLE] will.

If it's Canadian dollars it's cheap. Save up and buy the Safari.

Was the TD25 ever factory turbocharged like the bigger TD27? I am thinking a TD27 mated behind a 2WD automatic transmission will go into a Nissan D21 Hardbody pickup if you choose the right candidate, which I think I have in a 1991 Nissan pickup I saw in the junkyard 2 weeks ago. The truck is a 2WD longbed (rarer for a Hardbody because most everyone I see in my local area is always a kingcab or single cab/shortbed) and came with the 3.0 V6 gasser behind an auto tranny. The right year TD27 may be a bolt-in on this truck. If it is I'll be thinking long and hard to see if I want to start a project like this.

Nope, don't think so. Here's a TD (I think):

It's clearly not turbocharged.

People often make the same mistake with old MB 300TD. For MB, the "TD" indicated Wagon, not Turbo.

T is the engine family ... as S is another engine family.

TD fours have been sold in N/A and Turbo ... not to mention the RBD-MZ and the VE injection pumps, respectively.

It's all in the book.

Scroll back up for the primary differences.

You start with the book then you need the updates and the new model release training advise books. And a good guess.

I've had an inquiry about TD42T forums or assistance from the UK by a tradesman. Any pointers please help.

Pointers about what ... specifically? TD engines were not fitted to anything in the USA and I'm not sure about Canada.
