The Mig welder sounds like a really good idea- especially because I have one.
Looks like that nub is coming out after all, I have no clue why I failed to think of that myself, cause I just did some rigourous bed repair using the wire and a slide hammer.
Ill see how it goes when i pull the cover in 1.5 weeks

Yes, you have to replace it.

Nah! It happens to everybody. Last Saturday I removed the head on a low-mileage one-owner '87 Civic I bought last fall with a siezed cam (oil restrictor orifice feeding the head plugs up with crud). Anyways, one of the exhaust manifold studs broke off right at the edge of the head for no good reason (probably a fatigue failure due to slight side-loading of the stud). The nuts had no corrosion on them and all of the nuts came off the studs just fine, except that one which brought the rest of the stud with it. Fortunately, the head is scrap since I have another good one ready to put on so I don't have to deal with it. But I never expected it to happen on this car as everything was so clean and corrosion free.after oil wrote:you guys make me feel like less of a moron than i really am.just glad that im not the only one that brakes bolts and whatnot
It's that 'wild card' factor that makes wrenching so darn unpredictable. One broken-off bolt can turn a simple two-hour job into a grueling two-week fiasco faster than you can say 'snap'.

Thank you Al, I thought I'd ask, because it takes days to get this kind of stuff here in HI. Also, on my escort diesel, the exhaust manifold gasket is made of 1/16" metal so it can be reused without any problems
Of course, NAPA doesn't have it in stock so I'll have to have it shipped.

Man, that's the truth. It seems like just getting something disassembled is 3/4 of the battle with the stuff that I work on.redmondjp wrote:It's that 'wild card' factor that makes wrenching so darn unpredictable. One nice thing about NAPA is that they rarely explicitly tack on the shipping; it comes in their "normal" shipment, unless you have to have it faster, in which case my NAPA UPS's it in, and I pay the shipping in that case.Zoltan wrote:on my escort diesel, the exhaust manifold gasket is made of 1/16" metal so it can be reused without any problems.
Just to be clear: it's a single gasket that seals both the intake and exhaust ports/manifolds.
