A/C Compressor ?

#1

Post by Shagbark »

Greetings. I've been lurking here for about a week, reading the FAQ and many of the posts. I must say that I am very impressed with the knowledge and hospitality exhibited by the members of this forum.
I recently purchased an 82 Maxima diesel wagon with 139,000-miles for $700 with a half tank of diesel in it :wink: . It was only meant to hold me over until I found a small diesel pickup but, I have taken a shine to it and want to keep it, regardless of whether I buy a pickup or not.
The car runs perfect but, it was missing it's A/C compressor. I bought a reman compressor for $35 but haven't had time to put it back together yet.
Another thread made mention of a DIESEL compressor. I wasn't aware that there was a difference between the diesel and gasser compressors when I bought this one. The company I bought it from listed the compressor that I bought for both applications. How can I tell whether it's a diesel compressor or not?

Thanks,

Frank

Hello, Frank:

You may want to add that info to your Signature (click on Profile link at the top of any page to edit your Signature). It saves anyone reading your posts having to try to remember what rig you have, and it also saves you having to say it over and over . . . also include which trans you have (if it's stock it's an L3N71b; just say "AT").

IMO, any of them will work just fine in any application. Do not worry about a "diesel" version of the A/C compressor. But for completeness, here's the story as I read it.

I had to open all the manuals for this one :roll:

It's all a bit confusing . . .

Looking at the Parts Catalogue, there are four compressors listed over the years (some supersede others). If I am reading this mishmash correctly:
  • Up to Jun-81: 92600-W2100 -> 92600-W2110
  • Jul-81 thru Jun-82: 92600-V2500 -> 92600-V2501
  • (Gasser Jul-82 thru Oct-82) and (LD28 Jul-82 onward): 92600-D8101
  • (Gasser Nov-82 onward): 92600-W3205
Seems straightforward enough, right?

Now, checking the various FSMs:
  • 1981 Diesel Supplement says, "Hitachi MJ-167 -> see main FSM", ie it's the same for L24E and LD28
  • 1982 says, "Hitachi MJS-170 (Gasoline engine model)" and says nothing about a diesel engine model. Go figure.
  • 1983 says, "Hitachi MJS-170" period. Apparently the same as 1982, they just stopped trying to differentiate between L24E and LD28 versions
  • 1984 (no LD28 in that year) says, "DIESEL KIKI DKV-14B"
So there you have it. "Diesel Kiki" is a brand; they also license to build injection pumps and probably other things. I think that between Nissan having odd overlaps of LD28/L24E for compressor coverage, and the misleading "Diesel Kiki" brand, that some rebuilders/suppliers list them incorrectly.

IMO, any of them will work just fine in any application. Do not worry about a "diesel" version of the A/C compressor. The only glitch might be the hose hookup; I have no idea if all the Hitachis use the same fittings, but I think it would be a good bet.

Thanks Al. That info is very much appreciated. Just got home from a very long day and haven't had time to respond. I'll get my car listed in my user info tomorrow, after I hit the snooze button about three times.
