fuel injection pump gear pulley

Post by gus brewin »

Hello,

I have a question on the fuel injection pum gear pulley.

I understand that when you put the belt on b on the dot -What does b line up with on the block?

I realize that the #1 piston is at top dead center. I realize that the fuel injection pump has already fired for the #1 so how would I know where b would fire next in what order. That I am still not on #1 firing?

I would appreciate any help. My Verizon Cell phone # (603)944-6666.

Thank you.

There is no mark on the block to line up to. The FSM procedure it to make certain that No. 1 is at TDC (by looking through oil fill hole at the cam lobes) and using the mark on the crank sprocket to align with the white paint mark on the IP belt.

fuel injection pump belt

Thank You for the message yesterday. I still do not understand where the two marks on the belts line up. Is there suppose to be a mark on the crank shaft pulley- because I do not have one. Without any marks how do I know which injector is getting fuel?

I have had some help from a retired diesel mechanic. He thinks that the mark on the crank shaft pulley that holds the chain is the dot that lines up
with the belt. He brings the engine off top dead center counter clockwise
to line up with the line on the belt.

I disagree - to bring the engine off top dead center.

Thank you very much. I need help.

I have not done this job in a couple of years.

I recall the IP Belt Sheave on the crankshaft having a dot. I don't have a better picture available.

Can anybody help Gus out here?

I'll try to take a picture this evening of the crank pulley. There is a notch or possibly a dot on the inboard flange of the pulley. By flange I mean the raised edge which prevents the belt from walking off the pulley.

Click for a larger view - much larger!

Hope this helps. As you can see, it isn't much of a mark.

The crank need not be exactly in position for 1 at TDC, but you can't be a whole turn out of phase either.
