The oil filter assy. And the lines. And the general non-accessiblilty of that area. It looks a nightmare to me.

There is no way around this is there? In other words, what else could be used to determine correct IP timing? EGT, fuel consumption, power? I'm assuming no one has done this and obtained numbers to use with a TachN'Time? I know, I'm welcome to be first. BTW what is a good price on a TachNTime (there are two on EBay right now)? Would I be better off with the Snap On unit?

I have two TnT, and I paid something like $200 for one, a bit over $100 for the other. If complete, they're worth somewhere in that range.

The SO 1480 unit is useless unless you have the optional 257 inductive pickup, don't bother with a 1480 unless it comes with one. I have a 1480 as well. They go for next to nothing for a reason.

Not having used a 257, I'm guessing it is probably easiest to use if you have a timing light that can do its own advance/retard of the signal. If you don't have one that has at least that feature, use the TnT, which does digital delay for you.

The 257 must have the actual pickup to be useful. A couple have come up for auction that don't have the PU.

Finally, I loan out one of my TnTs, so unless you plan on doing a lot of this stuff, the cost of shipping x2 may be cheaper. It's around $30-35 to ship both ways.

FWIW, the link to Snap On diesel pulse adapter has changed - as has the adapter itself.

Link to MT257B in Snap On catalog

The link from where?
Ugh. Gone plastic. I'm certain that this saved Snap-On some money over the fine metal box and plain slide switch used on the 'A' rev.

I notice that the price has not declined.

If the automatic and manual transmission LD28s have different timing numbers for use with the TacNTime, which set do you think should be used for timing an automatic engine converted over to five-speed use?

Maybe the two models have different cam grinds.

I am, as they used to say 25 years ago, stoked.

I went to the huge Portland Auto Swap Meet this past weekend (three days worth). I bought a lot of stuff, stuffed the '82 Wagon with goodies.

However, my last purchase was the best one, and related to this thread. I bought this box-o-goodies . . .
Image Image Image Image

. . . for $36. No, I didn't forget a zero. An OTC 3500 Diesel Luminosity Timer (watches for the combustion event via a probe in the glow plug hole) and a Snap-On MT-257, for $36.

Seldom have I gotten a better deal that that!

Why the odd number? I spotted the MT-257 and asked, "how much", because no price was visible. We talked a bit, long enough for me to qualify myself as knowing what the stuff was, and why I wanted it. I mentioned this site. I asked for the price again, he said, "$60". It was the last day of the event, people were packing up and leaving, and I had blown most of the cash I'd brought along, and had $35 and change in my pocket. I told him that, and that I'd love to buy it at that price, but that I didn't have the cash anymore. I was about to ask if I could get his email address so I could buy it later, when he said, "OK, just give me all the cash you have, including the change.". So, I did.

It also brought my day to an early end, because with not a dime in my pocket, I couldn't look at anything else, so I had to leave hours early! I mentioned that he had both ruined and made my day. He said, "Yeah, I hope you find three things you can't live without on the way out.". Evil, I told him.

This is a rebuilt IP from a 1986 Toyota PU with the 2L diesel. The adapter shown is a VW adapter.

Image Image

In order to use this adapter on the Toyota, the starter would have to be removed.

Even if (when) I shorten the VW adapter as Dr. Jones has done, I would not be able to fit the dial indicator in there. This is a problem similar to the one we have with our LD28s.

More info next week . . .

I bought this today on eBay:

It looks as if it might do the job. It was a lot less than US$170, but it also doesn't have the holder for the dial indicator.

Al, are you certain there is a holder? I think with that model there's simply a hole through the center and the gauge fits into the hole, the knurled screw tightens agaist the gauge.

At least that's what I've seen on others like this.

No, I don't know.

Doesn't matter: I can fab a bracket, and I have mag base stuff.

Its first test is going to be that 86 Toy diesel.
