82 and 84 Gen1 Maxima in Knoxville, TN JY

#1

Post by goglio704 »

My local yard has two Gen 1 gasser sedans. I've already pulled some parts from them. Does anyone have any suggestions or requests before these get crushed? I'm thinking about pulling one of the steering columns for the MF and ignitions switches. I have my eye on the overdrive trans in the 84, but they don't allow jacks in the yard. They'll probably crush it before I can arrange for somebody to help me pull the trans.

How are the condition of the grille assemblies with the plastic headlight bezels? Black front bumper? I'm in need of a driver's side sun visor also and would like to match my interior color of gray. How are the condition of the factory aluminum wheels? Front seats in decent shape? I've driven my car with seat covers on the front seats since the day I bought it and never did find a decent pair of front seats to replace mine. As you can see I'm interested in quite a few parts. Thanks for your reply.

Salvy,

I still strongly recommend the Gen 2 front seat swap - especially if you have a grey interior. The color match is very close (actual material is different though) and they are so much more suypportive if you can find a good pair with out too much wear. I realize that your proximity to JYs, kind of limits you, but if you are willing to ship a pair of seats...

The aluminum wheels are gone. I think one may have had a gray interior. If so, I'll look for a sunvisor. I know the seats in the 82 were trashed. I'll look at the 84 closer next time I'm there. Headlight bezels and grill? I'll have to look. Front bumper is pretty faded but not torn up IIRC. Shipping on a bumper would be brutal I'm sure.

Salvy, I wish I'd known you wanted a grille, there was a very good one at the JY last weekend, either on the '81 or the '83 ('83 has "chromed" grille).

Salvy,

Both interiors at the local yard have dirty, gray sunvisors with rust on the arm. I didn't get either of them yet, but I will if you want one. At least one of them had gasser info on it - some reference to catalytic converter. No seats of value in my opinion (the 82 seemed to be some elaborate power seat, but it was dirty with stuff growing on it - yuck.) I can get a grill and a driver's side headlight bezel that aren't broken, but are missing lots of chrome. I wonder if a person could finish getting the chrome off and paint them with paint meant for plastic?

grab all kinda switches and knobs and other assorted interior pieces. especially all the odd-ball plastic parts. Trim parts, etc, all the high wear cosmetic body & interior parts.

my window switches are starting to be difficult.

Often overlooked is the inside rearview mirror. They have plastic break-away bases for safety. And the silvering corrodes. I grab them when they're good.

Matt, thanks for looking into the parts for me. If you can get one of the gray sun visors without a sticker or gas info on it that would be fine. I'll accept them with the rust on the arms. As far as the grille and bezel go I'm in for them too and I'll pay you for their cost and the shipping for it all to me. Repainting them seems to be a good idea because usually the chrome doesn't last on them after 20 years. Drag about the aluminum wheels being gone, but I'm still not really sure if I want to keep the stock aluminum wheels or buy a different set of wheels for a 4-lug Datsun off Ebay. I'll keep in mind to look for 84-88 Maxima front seats and Ben thanks for the reminder. Al, believe it or not I'm in need of a whole lot of parts for this 82 Maxima that I've never came out and said anything about because it's a long list and some I've learned to live with their current condition. Hopefully I can get most of the stuff fixed on it and have it somewhat closer to the feel of driving a newer condition car around. Thanks everyone.

Salvy, were you looking for a grey glovebox pad?

I'm going to mount the tach & pyrometer there, and I'm loathe to put any holes in this one, which is very good. I'm going to look at just leaving it off and putting a plate there. This Wagon is never going to be restored, and I may as well get used to the idea.

Al S.

If I can get over there before they get crushed, I'll nab these parts for you. Can't promise though - I've been crazy busy lately.

Al, no I didn't need one for my car. If I happen to down the road I'll let you know. Matt, any updates on those parts and did you get a chance to go back to the yard? I can understand being busy and it's not a rush by any means. Thanks.

The 82 is gone, but the headlight bezels and grill were all busted up on that car anyway. I went today and got the grill and driver's side headlight bezel from the 84. The passenger's side bezel was broken. The grill says Nissan. These are (were) chromed. The areas that are not chromed are a gray or silver color. They are far from perfect. The sun visor is dirty, but should clean up. It does have the factory gasser info on it. You're not obligated to buy this stuff Salvy. I would have saved it for a rainy day anyway. If you like, I can try to get some pictures posted.

While I was there I decided to pull the back glass. Initially, I tried to save the rubber too, but it was age hardened in some spots and falling apart in others. I decided to cut it and not risk breaking the glass. This was an impulse buy of sorts. I had priced windshield and rear glass replacement online a while back. The windshield was not out of line, but the back glass was something like $550. That was installed, but still. I should try to get a new gasket from Nissan to go with it. I wonder if Nissan would be the only source?

Matt, sorry I hadn't replied sooner but I haven't got much chance to get on the net daily to check for updates. If you can get a good, clean picture of those items I'd appreciate it. I think there is a good chance I'll be buying the stuff from you. Thanks.
