I just sent mine out to get rebuilt as it was having a few issues. I will take photos of it when I get it back. Mine is a reduction type and I have looked at some of the other pictures that are posted of them and it seems different even from those. ( I will look closer at it when I get it back though)
My question is:
Will any Nissan SD2X series starter with the 9 tooth pinion work in the SD 25. Can I use the DD one?
The re-man one that Auto Parts Plus located for me was $400.00+ The rebuild is just under $200.00. I would like to have a spare just cuz.

Next time trans comes out I will do the ring gear as well. If not a new one will turn this one 90 degs.
Another question is: Are the ring gears available or are they different from application to application. ie: Heavier flywheel in fork lifts etc?

I thought I'd replied to this, but I don't see it . . .

I would appreciate those pictures.

I don't know. I suspect it will, but I don't know that.
[later]
I just checked NAPA, and they list the same starter choices for 1982 SD22 & 1985 SD25. I think that they're interchangeable.

Raylock Premium rebuild, GR style, 446001, $197
Beck-Arnley rebuild, DD style, 1870354, $170
Can I use the DD one?
AFAIK, the GR & DD starters are physically interchangeable. I've seen both styles on SD22s.
Next time trans comes out I will do the ring gear as well. If not a new one will turn this one 90 degs.
I seem to find wear at four places on Fours, though almost always worse at one spot. Will turning the flywheel 90° help?
Are the ring gears available or are they different from application to application. ie: Heavier flywheel in fork lifts etc?
For the '86 720 SD25, Nissan lists a part No. for the ring gear, separate from the flywheel:
Ring gear = 12312-37501, $112
Flywheel = 12310-P0704, $280

NAPA lists the flywheel, but not the ring gear separately (using application 1986 720 SD25, of course, since your D21 SD25 truck doesn't really exist!). NAPA SDF 304, $58, but that number doesn't come up on the retail NAPA site, only on their ProLink (dealer) site.

Al S.

I will have to see if there is a dowel in the flywheel or if the bolt pattern is Assym. I think that maybe I should look at picking up a starter next time I am across the 49th. I go to Montana on a pretty reg basis and I will check with NAPA there. Like I said they want 400+ for one from Auto Parts Plus. The Ca $ and US $ are virtually the same right now so don’t know why the huge price discrepancy. The one that you bought also crossed to Yanmar Ind/Ag motors and since my dad still works building gen sets for LSP in Vancouver I sent him the number to cross and see what the Yanmar is.

Just a thought and wonder if you would know if the RPM on the DD is different from the GR? I wonder if cranking speed will play a factor in the 22 as opposed to the 25. Perhaps if the DD one is a bit faster perhaps that will also assist in the cold starting? Just a thought, and if anyone had a sample of both to test, if he hasn’t already done it,,, you will. Or you will have access to the RPM in the specs someplace.

Thanks

Paul

Near as I can tell from the Manual I have a choice of three GR starters.
S114-453, or 454 or S13-92A. Both equipped with the pinion clutch mechanism and that is what I suspect is pooched on mine. I thought at first it was grinding against the ring gear but it does not appear to be. I have rolled the engine 360 and found two wear points, and used a die grinder with a small burr on the end of it to smooth out the sharp messed up pieces on the back side of the chamfer lead in. I will still think about turning the ring gear or flywheel (if I can) 90 degs next time. There are three other models of starters in the FSM that are DD's and appear to have the right nose piece bolt pattern on them as well. The pinion however looks too long, and are most likely for gassers.

There is no where in the rebuild section fo the FSM that states RPM that I can find either.

Interesting little guys for sure!!
