Introducing myself
HI!
I dont own a Maxima, BUT I do own a few Datsun, Nissan, and Infiniti products. Im a member of several Zcar, Roadster, and 510 forums. I have 2 cars though that will interest some people here.I have a 71 240Z with a VO7 block rear sump L20B rods, P90 head, and a various other gas and diesel parts. Its a 2.9L gas engine that uses the diesel block and crank as a plateform. It isnt finished but in theroy it should be a high reving stroker. I have another car that is well a junk yard refugee. Its a 1974 260Z. Its currently housing a L28et pushing 20#s of boost with a garret T3/T4
hybrid turbo. My crank angle sensor died last month and poof! or should I say pop goes the #6 weasel. I knew it was coming and have been planning on a diesel conversion for the car for several years. Ive collected 2 extra engines for the swap. I only had one good crank, BTW it wasnt a good crank after all. So Im kinda dead in the water at the moment. I was refered to this site by a gent on zcar.com. I have no idea how he found this place, but Ive got it bookmarked now. Ive been looking for LD help for quite some time with no help from google or yahoo. I host my own website listed in my profile here. Its pretty much about zcar and what Ive learned since the time when I knew nothing at all about cars to the point now where Im running around restoring and repairing everyones old zcars. Now I dont feel so alone in the world with my LD projects.
I guess my plans are to find another rear sump LD28 running or close to it and put it into my car which is sitting on the curb begging to be driven. Id like to turbo charge it and play with some propane injection, but I wont get to far ahead of myself just yet. Id like to just have a running stock LD28 to start with. LOL
Anyway thats me and what Im doing. Hi all!

Re: Introducing myself
Hello:
What is a "rear sump LD28"? The few LD28 drop-ins I've seen have all fab'd the pan and pickup. Is this some kind of OEM alternative? If so, what did it come in, and where does one buy one?DMS wrote:. . . another rear sump LD28 running or close to it . . .

rear sump pics
I bought a rear sump version of the LD28 engine from All Engine Distributing in Fresno Ca a few years back. As I recall it was imported from Japan but was told that they were used state side as generator engines and such. Here is a pic.
pics are large so just link to em:

This one was converted by me to a gas engine for my 240z but as you can see the pan is the diesel pan and I didnt convert the block. It was originally a rear sump. Wish I could find more. I could do all the machine work to make my good Maxima block work, but I still need a crank and balancer.

weird intake
The engine was complete when I bought it and had some other small differences.
pic of intake
I did find a pic of the intake

very clean looking.
Notice the lack of an EGR? Also there is no suport for the extra TB choke thing that I have yet to figure out that came on the Maximas. Im going to polish it up and install it on my LD if I ever get a good bottom end together.

The EGR system used in the US requires the vacuum-controlled throttle body to obtain enough delta pressure between the exhaust and intake. The throttle is actuated to encourage more exhaust flow into the intake. The '81-81 Maxima has three states (no flow, low flow, high flow); the '83 system goes to four-stages and more plumbing to suit.
It's interesting to to see the upper plenum without the mounting bosses, but it's also lacking a way of mounting Maxima the throttle cable sheave.

rear sumps
I found another fairly close to me that I may pickup this weekend. Im waiting to hear about a third one as well. Both of them are in the $500 range which sounds fair to me. The funny part is that one of those engines is being supplied by a company I already called and received a quote for $1750... I guess Dennis called him back up and let him know my situation or something. So that is cool.
If the other is indeed a rear sump I cant afford 2 so Ill pass the info along to anyone interested. The one place , name is eluding me at this moment I have the sales persons name, has 20+ LD engines ready to go. All of them are runners. Ill definitely get back to you guys with that info if anyone is interested.

I see that the block is different to accommodate the rear dipstick. I suppose that the oil pickup tube galley is drilled similar to the gasser block's? Or do you know?

If you ever get a chance to inspect a L20B engine you will find striking similarities to the LD.
The casting is basically the same for the L and LD. The main difference that threw me off is the gas version had a water port that goes out the front of the block into the timing cover and then 90s out to a fitting and on to the radiator. The LD has that built into the head. The oil gallery is basically the same. They made one casting fit all applictions. They just drilled here or here to make the difference between rear and front sump. So if you look at a F54 L series block youll see a spot where they could have drilled for a front sump oil pinkup and a spot for a front sump dip stick. Its just not machined. The earlier gas blocks P30 and N42 were strickly rear sump as far as I can tell. The V07 block is the same as the F54. It just needs machined. Im sure ppl on this forum have done the front to rear conversion havent they? That was my first option anyway.

Apparently he tried to drill for the rear sump, but it didn't go to the oil gallery.DMS wrote:The V07 block is the same as the F54. It just needs machined. Im sure ppl on this forum have done the front to rear conversion haven't they? That was my first option anyway.

sounds like work for a competent machine shop. Extend the oil gallery to the new sump area and drill up. I know its been done I just didnt get any instructions.
as for the 2 V07 engines I know that the cams are different as I have 2 different cams, the intake and exhaust manifolds are different, and that is all I can tell. Im assuming since nobody has found a rear sump LD in a vehicle it has to be some kind of inductrial engine. Ive been told before they were used as everything from farm equipment to generator engines.

Of course, that's not in the US.davehoos wrote:. . . the mid oil pan LD28 are most likely cedric[comercial] engines . . .
